CONTACT Pittsburgh has offered immediate emotional support to help people of all ages who may be suicidal, in emotional distress, or in need of information and referral sources for nearly 38 years. Volunteers are needed to serve as Crisis Line Specialists for the 24 hour Crisis and Suicide hotline handling calls from adults, students, teens and young people, and veterans. It is not necessary for volunteers to have a background in social work…volunteers include teachers, business professionals, health and safety personnel, nurses, lawyers, students, home-makers, and retirees. This is a great opportunity to learn about crisis management and counseling. Volunteers go through training and are asked to commit to a year of service, and the minimum age to serve as a Crisis Line Specialist is 18.

Comprehensive training classes are offered four times a year for a nominal fee and they will focus on the development of active listening skills and an understanding of issues commonly raised by callers.

Volunteers will be required to attend one two-day 16 hour suicide intervention skills training facilitation and a 32 hour general volunteer training session. The Winter training dates will be evenings and weekends starting on January 21, 2010.

Thursday nights at Fayette City Community Center in town. Free parking. Doors open at 5:30, Bingo starts at 7p.

Ethan Loney, son of Ken and Kelly (Garvin) Loney, is 2 years old and diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. This special blood drive is to help replenish the community blood supply that Ethan has used and will be using in his treatment plan.

Donors can also elect to join the Be The Match registry at no charge. They will just be asked to fill out additional paperwork and submit a sample mouth swab.
